Soul and Mind in Astrology

Life is a journey...

We live our lives along a strong line from birth to death. In this journey, the harmony between the soul and the physical body is extremely important. If your soul desires something, but your physical body cannot fulfill it, this is when stress, frustration, and unmet expectations occur. In this article, we will explore how the elements of soul and mind are interpreted in astrology and how their harmony plays out in our lives.

To give you a tip, I can say that the true meaning of stress is "a situation where expectations are not met." Stress is also related to illnesses, and if we are not healthy during our life journey, the physical body becomes unable to do anything. That’s why the balance between the physical body and the desires of the soul is so important.

It is essential to maintain a perfect balance between the physical body and the desires of the soul. In astrology, we define these two terms as the Sun and the Moon. We characterize the physical body with logic, reason, and rational choices. We view the soul as our spiritual desires, subconscious, and instinctive choices.

Astrological references:

  • Sun: Logic, perception, selective attention, reasoning, self-awareness, existence, life process, father, male, and masculine figures.

  • Moon: Spirituality, instincts, subconscious, memory, impulses, body fluids, hormonal values, mother, and feminine figures.

Differences between classical and modern astrology:

In modern astrology, we interpret the Sun as consciousness, while in classical astrology, the Sun is depicted as the soul. The Moon governs more concrete matters, as classical astrology suggests, such as land, real estate, and immovable properties.

It is crucial to understand this distinction. However, in both perspectives, the Sun and Moon are the main sources of light in astrology. The aspects (angles) between these two sources of light help us explain the balance between the soul and body.

That’s why births during certain lunar phases and the aspects between the Sun and Moon in our natal charts are so significant. In this article, we will discuss the importance of the angular differences between the Sun and Moon.

If you don’t know the positions of the Sun and Moon at your birth, you can quickly generate your chart on free online sites. Additionally, if you know your Sun and Moon signs, you can also see the angular distance between them using the table below.

The usage of the table is as follows: If your Sun sign is Aries and your Moon sign is Gemini, look for the number between Aries and Gemini in the table. The number will be 60. This indicates that there is a 60-degree angle between Aries and Gemini.

Thus, you can discover that the angle between your Sun and Moon is 60 degrees.

Now, depending on the degree of the angle between your Sun and Moon, you can read the interpretations below.

If there is a 0-degree angle between the Sun and Moon:

This is called a conjunction aspect. It means that when you were born, the Moon was either in the balsamic phase or the new moon phase. Since your soul and consciousness are in the same sign, they work together, and we can say they are in harmony, which brings balance to your life. In other words, your emotions and thoughts do not conflict with each other and are in balance.

This situation can sometimes be an opportunity or a threat. Because it is not an aspect that holds you back, if your mind agrees to something, your emotions will also agree. But when you are angry or frustrated, this alignment won’t create a counter-thought to stop you, which could prevent you from controlling yourself.

In short, it is a balanced aspect, meaning you are not in conflict with yourself. We can say that the soul and physical body are in harmony. You have strong innovative tendencies and are likely at peace with yourself, without seeking approval from others.

If there is a 30-degree angle between the Sun and Moon:

This is called a semi-sextile aspect. It indicates that when you were born, the Moon was in the crescent or last quarter phase. Your soul and consciousness are in a position of partial understanding. They try to agree but are inclined to give each other room to speak.

This aspect suggests that you are not stubborn, you are more inclined to make agreements, and you may have a quieter soul. There is a complementary connection between your soul and physical body. For those who receive support, this aspect can provide the potential to succeed in a specific focus area.

If there is a 60-degree angle between the Sun and Moon:

This is called a sextile aspect. There is a harmonious connection between your soul and mind. They balance each other well, and if supported, this harmony can turn into luck. There is also a connection between the past and the present. You are naturally a harmonious person.

In situations where you need to act or leave things as they are, your mind and subconscious work in harmony. You could say there’s a friendship between them. When one side desires something, the other side meets it in a friendly way. Your emotions and passions are supported by reason and logic.

If there is a 90-degree angle between the Sun and Moon:

This is called a square aspect. It’s a challenging aspect and represents struggle, ambition, and determination. There is a disagreement or conflict between your soul and physical body. We can say there are blockages and difficulties between the past and the future.

Tension, anger, and irritability may also be present. This aspect represents dissatisfaction, incompletion, and conflict, as well as the inability to fulfill needs, leading to more struggle and ambition. Since there is discord, even if something makes logical sense, your emotions might not support it, or vice versa—your passions may push you toward something, but your mind resists.

In this challenging aspect, it’s essential not to let one side dominate and to strive for balance between both. This aspect can only be harmonized through willpower.

If there is a 120-degree angle between the Sun and Moon:

This is called a trine aspect, one of the most harmonious aspects. The soul and physical body work together with love and harmony. It promises success and luck but can also induce laziness or inertia. Therefore, we can say that the potential for success depends on your luck.

The harmony between your soul and mind brings good fortune in many situations. It becomes easier to align your instincts and desires with reason. Whatever makes sense logically and rationally, your emotions and instincts will follow and support.

This aspect symbolizes doing what feels right for you and being socially balanced. Your general outlook on life tends to be optimistic and benevolent.

If there is a 150-degree angle between the Sun and Moon:

This is called a quincunx aspect. In ancient astrology, this aspect was described as a "callus." Imagine you have a callus under your foot—it hurts when you walk, but you can’t see or locate it. Yet, you know something is bothering you.

This is the nature of the quincunx aspect. It reveals a significant issue when discovered. Because it is an invisible aspect, there is a disconnect between your soul and physical body. One side says one thing, while the other says something completely different. It signifies a tendency toward misunderstandings and difficulties in expressing yourself.

This aspect can lead you to certain things through a karmic bond or a mysterious force, yet in the physical world, the same rules don’t apply. Therefore, it can cause imbalances between the soul and reason. We can also say that you constantly seek approval and reassurance.

If there is a 180-degree angle between the Sun and Moon:

This is called an opposition aspect. It indicates that you were born during a full moon. We know that full moons tend to trigger the release of inner “creatures” within us. It suggests the possibility of transformation, much like the legend of the werewolf. Whatever exists in the soul is reflected in reason, and whatever is in reason is reflected in the soul.

This creates imbalance, polarity, and duality. When your emotional and instinctive world says "yes" to something, your mind and consciousness may reject it. Or we may observe the exact opposite. It is possible that you feel as though you are carrying two separate identities or personalities.

Since the conscious and subconscious work in opposition, we can say that there is a challenging connection between the soul and the physical body. Nevertheless, this aspect grants you the ability to see things objectively, view situations from multiple perspectives, and achieve maturity.

With awareness,
